Browning Auto-5

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Browning Automatic 5, commonly called the Auto-5 or A-5, is a recoil operated semi-automatic shotgun designed by John Browning and manufactured by Fabrique Nationale de Herstal beginning in 1902. It was the first successful semi-automatic shotgun design and remained in production until 1998. Its name refers to its five round total capacity, four in the magazine and one in the chamber, and Remington Arms and Savage Arms later produced nearly identical variants under their own names. FAQs

Did the Browning Auto-5 see military service?

Yes. It served worldwide from World War I through the Vietnam War, including with British forces in Malaya.

Yes, although it was designed as a sporting and hunting shotgun. According to Wikipedia, the shotgun saw military service worldwide from World War I through the Vietnam War. Special Air Service troops used it heavily in the Malayan Emergency, where it suited close quarter jungle fighting. The United Kingdom formally adopted it in November 1965 for use in tropical conditions and for explosive ordnance disposal work. The United States bought 60,000 Remington Model 11 shotguns, a licensed version of the design, in World War II, and used them as training guns for navy aerial gunners and as riot guns.
