CAR-15

Small Arms And Sidearms

The CAR-15 is a family of M16 rifle based firearms that Colt marketed in the 1960s and early 1970s. The name is most commonly associated with the Colt Commando, also known as the XM177, a select-fire carbine with an ultrashort barrel of 10.5 or 11.5 inches and an oversized flash suppressor. Built in the United States and chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO and .223 Remington, variants of the family saw service from 1966 into the 1990s and beyond. FAQs

How did the short barrel of the CAR-15 Commando affect its handling?

According to Military Factory: The Commando retained much of the form and function of the AR-15/M16 lines though the shorter barrel assembly and telescoping shoulder stock effected accuracy somewhat. A special muzzle component was designed to retard muzzle flash as well as suppress the exiting action though the Commando was far from a "silenced" weapon.
