The CAR-15 is a family of M16 rifle based firearms that Colt marketed in the 1960s and early 1970s. The name is most commonly associated with the Colt Commando, also known as the XM177, a select-fire carbine with an ultrashort barrel of 10.5 or 11.5 inches and an oversized flash suppressor. Built in the United States and chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO and .223 Remington, variants of the family saw service from 1966 into the 1990s and beyond.
