The Skorpion vz. 61 is a Czechoslovak machine pistol designed by Miroslav Rybář in the late 1950s and officially adopted in 1961 under the designation Samopal vzor 61. It was manufactured by Česká zbrojovka in Uherský Brod from 1963 to 1979, with production resuming in 2009, and roughly 200,000 units have been made across its variants. It was originally chambered in .32 ACP, with later variants in .380 ACP, 9 by 18 millimeter Makarov and 9 by 19 millimeter Parabellum, and fires at about 850 rounds per minute from magazines of 10, 20 or 30 rounds. Its distinctive folding metal stock curves upward in a shape resembling a scorpion's tail, which gave the weapon its name.

Why is the Skorpion vz. 61 called a machine pistol?
Its telescoping bolt and low-recoil cartridges keep it small enough to be carried like a pistol.
It is sometimes regarded as a machine pistol because of its compact size. That size is made possible by an internal telescoping bolt that wraps around the barrel assembly. The cartridges it fires also give lower recoil than those of its contemporaries, so the weapon is often treated like a pistol and can be carried in a holster.
