The flamethrower is a ranged incendiary weapon that projects a controllable jet of fire, first used in a primitive form by the Byzantine Empire in the 7th century AD. Its modern military use began in World War I, when Germany first employed it against French troops outside Verdun on 26 February 1915, and its use expanded greatly during World War II.
