The flintlock pistol, developed by the French gunsmith Marin le Bourgeoys around 1610 to 1615, served as both a self-defense weapon and a military sidearm. Its effective range was short, so it was frequently carried as an adjunct to a sword or cutlass, with sizes ranging from small pocket pistols to long horse pistols carried in saddle holsters.
