The garrote is a weapon and a method of capital punishment consisting of a handheld, and in later years sometimes mechanical, ligature made of chain, rope, scarf, wire, or fishing line, used to strangle a person. The Spanish form of the word, garrote vil, is associated with judicial execution by this method.
