HOT (missile)

The HOT, a French acronym for Haut subsonique Optiquement Teleguide Tire d'un Tube, is a second-generation, long-range, tube-launched anti-tank guided missile developed jointly by the French company Nord Aviation and the West German firm Bolkow, later merged respectively into Aerospatiale and Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm. It was built to replace the older SS.11 wire-guided missile in French and West German service, and compared to the SS.11 it flies faster and further and is guided semi-automatically rather than by hand. It entered production in 1977 and became one of the most successful missiles of its class, with tens of thousands built, used by more than a dozen countries, and proven in combat in several wars; it is commonly mounted on light and medium armored vehicles and on attack helicopters.
