Ikara (missile)

The Ikara, named after an Australian Aboriginal word meaning throwing stick, was an Australian ship-launched anti-submarine missile designed around 1959-60 and produced in the early 1960s. It carried an acoustic homing torpedo out to a maximum range of ten nautical miles, letting a ship attack a submarine without closing to the shorter ranges that would otherwise put the launching vessel at risk, and it was operated by the Royal Australian Navy, Royal Navy, Royal New Zealand Navy, Brazilian Navy and Chilean Navy from the 1960s until it was phased out in the early 1990s as its torpedoes became obsolete.
