The 2S7 Pion, later upgraded as the 2S7M Malka, is a Soviet self-propelled 203 mm cannon built with a chassis from the Kirov Factory in Saint Petersburg and a gun and mount from the Titan-Barrikady plant in Volgograd. It entered service in 1976, with production estimates ranging from about 250 to as many as 1,000 units distributed among former Soviet states after 1991; it carries a crew of fourteen, weighs about 46,500 kilograms, and can reach 47.5 kilometers with rocket-assisted projectiles. It remains in service with Russia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan, North Korea, Angola and Georgia. Why does the 2S7 Pion have an audible firing alarm?
The gun blast can incapacitate unprepared people nearby, so an alarm sounds for about five seconds before firing.
The blast of the 203 mm gun is so powerful that it can physically incapacitate an unprepared soldier or crew member standing near it, because of the concussive force. For this reason the Pion is equipped with an audible alarm that sounds a series of short warning tones for about five seconds before the round is fired.
