The Kh-31 is a Soviet and Russian air-to-surface missile designated AS-17 Krypton by NATO. It is carried by tactical aircraft such as the MiG-29, Su-35 and Su-57, and it can reach Mach 3.5, which made it the first supersonic anti-ship missile that a tactical aircraft could launch. Several variants exist. The best known is the anti-radiation version, which homes on enemy radar emitters, but there are also an anti-ship version and a target drone version. The weapon uses a solid fuel rocket for the first stage and a ramjet for the rest of its flight. It is used by Russia and by several export customers, among them Serbia, China, India, Algeria and Egypt. There has also been talk of adapting it into a long-range air-to-air missile aimed at airborne early warning aircraft.
