The L-SAM is a South Korean long-range surface-to-air and anti-ballistic missile system developed by the Agency for Defense Development with Hanwha and LIG Nex1. It forms the upper tier of South Korea's layered Korean Air and Missile Defense system, intended to intercept ballistic missiles in their terminal phase using dual-pulsed rocket motors and an S-band AESA radar, with performance its developers compare to the American THAAD and Israeli Arrow interceptors. Development of the initial L-SAM Block 1 was declared complete and combat-ready in May 2024 after a series of successful interception tests, with deployment to the Republic of Korea Air Force planned for 2028.
