The M224, officially the M224 60mm Lightweight Company Mortar System, is a smoothbore, muzzle loading, high angle of fire mortar used for close in support of ground troops, developed in the United States to replace worn World War Two era mortars. Prototypes were deployed in the mid 1970s during the Vietnam War and the system entered operational service in 1978, seeing extensive use by American forces since, including in Afghanistan and Iraq.
