The M25 Sniper Weapon System is a precision rifle built for United States Army Special Forces and later adopted by the United States Navy SEALs. It was developed by the 10th Special Forces Group at Fort Devens, Massachusetts, to meet a requirement for a sniper rifle based on a match grade M14. Special Operations Command called it the Light Sniper Rifle, and it is also known as the Sniper Security System and the Product Improved M21. The rifle uses a National Match M14 barrel in a fiberglass stock with a special gas piston and an advanced scope mounting system. It was not meant to replace the M24 but to give a squad marksman or a sniper spotter accurate fire beyond carbine range, and it has served as a designated marksman rifle since the Persian Gulf War.
