The M51 is a submarine-launched ballistic missile built by ArianeGroup for the French Navy, designed to replace the earlier M45 missile. First deployed on September 27, 2010, it is a three-stage, solid-fuel missile carrying six to ten independently targetable TN 75 warheads of 110 kilotons each, with an estimated range of 8,000 to 10,000 kilometers. It arms the Triomphant-class submarines of the French Navy, and the program traces back to an earlier M5 design concept begun in the late 1980s before being renamed M51 in 1996.
