The Malkara, named from an Aboriginal word for shield, was one of the earliest guided anti tank missiles. It was jointly developed by Australia and the United Kingdom between 1951 and 1954 and entered service in 1958, remaining in use until it was gradually replaced by the Vickers Vigilant missile in the late 1960s. It was designed to be light enough for airborne forces to deploy while still powerful enough to destroy any tank then in service. Its basic form was later adapted for the short range surface to air role as the Seacat missile and also influenced the development of the Ikara.
