The Mannlicher M1890 carbine, formally the repeating carbine model 1890, was a bolt-action carbine designed by Ferdinand Mannlicher around a new version of his straight-pull bolt. It was introduced in 1890 as a shorter and handier alternative to the Mannlicher M1888 and was made in three main forms: a cavalry carbine, a gendarmerie carbine and a navy short rifle. The cavalry version lacked a stacking rod, handguard and bayonet lug. The navy version, called the Stutzen, added sling swivels, a stacking rod and bayonet lugs, and the gendarmerie version had a bayonet lug but no stacking rod. The carbine fed from a five-round en bloc clip into an integral box magazine and was built by the Österreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft, with 115,218 made between 1891 and 1896. Conversions followed in Austria, Hungary and Ethiopia, and users included Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Siam and Afghanistan.
