Mannlicher M1893

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Mannlicher M1893, also called the M93, is a bolt-action repeating rifle that served as the standard service rifle of the Kingdom of Romania from 1893 to 1938. Together with its 1892 predecessor it was the first repeating rifle widely issued to the Romanian military. It was developed by the Austrian firm Osterreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft in Steyr, where Otto Schonauer and Ferdinand Mannlicher fixed the faults of the German Gewehr 1888 and fitted Mannlicher's en-bloc clip feed, and it was chambered for the 6.5x53mmR cartridge. Unlike the Austrian M1895, it used a conventional turn-bolt. Romania had about 373,000 rifles and 60,000 carbines in service when it entered the First World War in 1916, and only about 82,000 rifles remained at the end of that war. The Czechoslovak vz. 24 then replaced it as the standard rifle, and the older rifles stayed with second-line troops and the Gendarmerie until the end of World War II.
