AK-101

Small Arms And Sidearms

The AK-101 is a Kalashnikov assault rifle designed in 1994 and chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO for the export market, part of the AK-100 rifle family developed by Kalashnikov Concern. Gas-operated with a rotating bolt and capable of semi-automatic and fully automatic fire, it is built along the same lines as the AK-74M but incorporates composite furniture, and entered production in 1995. It remains in production and service today, aimed chiefly at customers whose forces already use NATO-standard ammunition. FAQs

How does the AK-101 differ from the AK-74M?

It is the same rifle chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO instead of 5.45mm.

The AK-101 is an export version of the 5.45mm Kalashnikov AK-74M assault rifle. The main difference between the two is the ammunition: the AK-101 is chambered for 5.56x45mm NATO, while the AK-74M fires the 5.45mm cartridge. Otherwise the AK-101 is basically the same rifle as the AK-74M, which is the standard issue rifle of the Russian army.
