The MdCN, short for Missile de Croisière Naval, is the French ship- and submarine-launched cruise missile, the naval variant of the SCALP EG air-launched missile that MBDA builds. CSIS Missile Threat lists it under the name SCALP Naval and describes a weapon 5.5 metres long with a body diameter of 0.5 metres and a launch weight of 1,400 kilograms. A Microturbo TR-50 turbojet powers it, and it carries a new multipurpose warhead of 300 kilograms of high explosive. Guidance combines an inertial navigation system with GPS midcourse updates. French warships can fire it from Sylver A70 vertical launchers with a stated range of 1,400 kilometres, while submarines can fire it from standard 533 mm torpedo tubes with a potential range of 1,000 kilometres. The French Ministry of Defense contracted MBDA in 2002 to develop the sea-launched version, which was then under-water tested in 2010. It sits alongside the Storm Shadow Missile, the air-launched version, as a related but separate weapon.
