The Rheinmetall MG 3 is a German general purpose machine gun chambered for the 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. It descends from machine guns standardized in West Germany in the late 1950s, beginning with the MG1 in 1958 and continuing through the MG1A1, MG1A2 and MG1A3, with the MG3 variant itself introduced in 1968.
