Mistral, formally the Missile Transportable Anti-aerien Leger, is a French short-range air defense missile family using infrared homing, manufactured by MBDA France, previously Matra Defense and Matra BAe Dynamics. Development of the portable SATCP system began in 1974, and the first version, Mistral 1, entered service in 1990, followed by Mistral 2 in 1998 and Mistral 3 in 2013. It is built as a man-portable and vehicle-mounted very short range air defense weapon, with a variant adapted for air-to-air use as well.
