The Mossberg 185 is a 20-gauge bolt-action shotgun made by O.F. Mossberg & Sons in New Haven, Connecticut, between 1947 and 1964, although the article opening line gives 1948 as the first year. It takes 2.75 inch shells and feeds from a removable box magazine holding two shells, for three rounds with one chambered, and its takedown design lets the receiver and barrel separate from the stock after removing the magazine and one screw. The one-piece American walnut stock has a Monte Carlo comb. The D models, built from 1947 to 1950 and into the late 1950s in revised forms, came with three screw-on choke tubes, while the K models carried a C-LECT adjustable choke and a ported barrel. Mossberg's early bolt-action shotguns derived from Mauser rifles that had been converted to smooth bore. The article describes a sporting gun and names no military or police users.
