Did South Korea try to buy foreign turret technology before building the K9 Thunder?
Yes, but Vickers refused the transfer and Marconi priced it too high, so Korea built its own.
Yes. In September 1990 a Korean developer visited the United Kingdom looking for the turret design technology that Vickers was known to have developed for the AS-90. Vickers refused to transfer the technology and offered to sell the finished AS-90 instead. Talks with Marconi also ended unsatisfactorily because of the high price requested. The developers then pursued a domestic electrohydraulic driving system, drawing on experience with the turret and turret driving devices of the K1 main battle tank.
