Home›Weapons Systems›Operator›United States Air ForceArmed Forces and UnitsUnited States Air ForceModernReference and ClassificationDevelopingThe United States Air Force was established as an independent military service on September 18, 1947, under the National Security Act, separating from the Army Air Forces that had carried out American strategic and tactical airpower operations throughout World War II, including the strategic bombing campaigns over Germany and Japan and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Built around the doctrine that airpower, including strategic bombing, air superiority and, from the Cold War onward, nuclear deterrence via long-range bombers and intercontinental ballistic missiles, constituted an independent and decisive dimension of modern warfare, the new service organized itself around Strategic Air Command, Tactical Air Command and later a wide array of specialized commands. The Air Force played central roles in Cold War nuclear deterrence, the Korean and Vietnam Wars' air campaigns, the 1991 Gulf War's demonstration of precision-guided airpower, and subsequent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq, continually advancing jet fighter, bomber, airlift, and, later, stealth and unmanned aircraft technology. The Air Force ceded its space and cyber operational responsibilities in part to the newly created United States Space Force in 2019, while remaining the primary American service for air superiority, strategic airlift and long-range strike.FactsUnited States Air ForceConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsForce TypeWell-attestedAir service branch of the United States Armed Forces 1Founded YearWell-attested1947 1Traces origins to 1907 within the Army Signal Corps; established as an independent branch in 1947, per the same source.CountryWell-attestedUnited States 1Force TypeForce Type (category)Well-attestedAir Force 1United States Air ForceFilter Results61 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAir-to-Air Missiles (4)Air-to-Ground Missiles and Guided Bombs (10)Anti-Satellite and Space-Based Weapons (1)Anti-Ship and Anti-Submarine Missiles (1)Armored Cars and Reconnaissance Vehicles (1)Assault Rifles (1)Assault Rifles of the United States (1)Ballistic Missiles (7)Ballistic Missiles of the United States (7)Bomber Aircraft (4)Cruise Missiles (10)Fighter and Multirole Aircraft (3)General-Purpose and Medium Machine Guns (1)Ground-Attack Aircraft and Gunships (2)Heavy Machine Guns (1)Helicopters and Tiltrotors (2)Infantry Fighting Vehicles and Armored Personnel Carriers (1)Military Drones and Unmanned Aircraft (1)Nuclear Weapons and Strategic Bombs (2)Other Missiles and Guided Munitions (2)Other Small Arms and Personal Weapons (1)Pistols and Revolvers (2)Revolvers (2)Rifles and Carbines (1)Shotguns (1)Surface-to-Air and Air Defense Missiles (1)Transport and Reconnaissance Aircraft (2)Weapon Type or ClassAllAir superiority fighter aircraft (1)air-launched anti-ship cruise missile (1)Air-launched ballistic missile with hypersonic glide vehicle (1)Air-launched cruise missile (2)Air-launched decoy cruise missile (1)Air-to-air missile (1)Air-to-ground guided missile (1)Air-to-ground missile (1)Air-to-ground strategic cruise missile (1)Air-to-surface conventional bomb (1)Air-to-surface missile (2)air-to-surface tactical missile (1)Airborne Laser (ABL) anti-ballistic missile weapons system (1)Anti-satellite missile (1)Armored car (1)Armored personnel carrier (1)Assault rifle, carbine (1)attack aircraft (1)Beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (1)Dive bomber and scout aircraft (1)Fighter and fighter-bomber aircraft (1)Fighter-bomber and interceptor aircraft (1)Flying bomb (1)Glide bomb (1)Ground-launched cruise missile (1)Guided air-to-air missile (1)guided missile (6)Gunship aircraft (1)Heavy bomber aircraft (1)Heavy machine gun (1)Intercontinental ballistic missile (2)Intercontinental ballistic missile system (1)Land-based intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) (1)Large-yield bomb (1)Medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) (1)Military transport aircraft (1)missile (2)Precision guided munition (1)Precision-guided munition guidance kit (1)Pump-action shotgun (1)Revolver (1)Rotary medium machine gun (1)small arm (1)Small arms (rocket launcher) (1)Stealth strategic bomber aircraft (1)Strategic bomber (1)Strategic reconnaissance aircraft (1)Surface-to-surface cruise missile (1)Tiltrotor military transport aircraft (1)Unmanned aerial vehicle (1)Unpowered glide weapon (1)utility helicopter (1)CaliberAll.223 Remington (1).38 Special (2).50 BMG (1).50 caliber (2)105mm (1)12-gauge (1)13mm (1)20mm (1)28-gauge (1)30mm (1)40mm (1)5.56x45mm NATO (1)7.62x51mm NATO (1)90mm (1)Introduced EraAll1933 (1)1937 (1)1940 (2)1944 (1)1945 (1)1946 (1)1949 (1)1952 (1)1953 (1)1955 (2)1956 (3)1958 (1)1959 (2)1960 (3)1961 (1)1962 (2)1963 (2)1966 (2)1967 (1)1970 (2)1972 (1)1975 (1)1976 (1)1977 (1)1980 (1)1982 (1)1983 (2)1984 (2)1985 (3)1986 (1)1990 (1)1991 (1)1994 (1)1995 (1)1997 (1)1999 (1)2003 (1)2007 (1)2008 (1)2009 (1)2017 (1)2018 (1)2020 (1)2021 (1)2026 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (34)Out of Production (1)Prototype or Experimental (3)Retired (20)Under Development (3)Wars Used InAllBosnian War (2)Cambodian Civil War (4)Cold War (1)Falklands War (3)First Indochina War (1)Gulf War (16)Iran-Iraq War (4)Iraq War (12)Korean War (4)Kosovo War (5)Laotian Civil War (3)Russo-Ukrainian War (3)Rwandan Civil War (1)Second Sudanese Civil War (1)Soviet-Afghan War (1)Syrian Civil War (5)Vietnam War (16)War in Afghanistan (2001-2021) (6)World War II (4)Yemeni Civil War (2)Yom Kippur War (2)Yugoslav Wars (2)ManufacturerAllACDelco (1)Aerojet (1)Bell Textron (2)Boeing Defense, Space & Security (3)Colt's Manufacturing Company (2)Dillon Aero (1)Douglas (1)Fairchild (1)FN Herstal (1)Ford Motor Company (1)Frigidaire (1)General Atomics Aeronautical Systems (1)General Dynamics Corporation (3)General Electric (1)General Motors (1)Glenn L.
