The Panzerschreck, formally the Raketenpanzerbuchse 54, was a German shoulder-fired anti-tank rocket launcher whose name is usually translated as tank terror. Developed in 1942 as an enlarged copy of the captured American bazooka and fielded from 1943 to 1945, it fired an 88mm fin-stabilized, shaped-charge rocket that kept burning for about two meters after leaving the tube, giving it greater armor penetration than the bazooka but also a fierce backblast that forced gunners to wear heavy gloves, protective ponchos, and gas masks. Germany produced roughly 314,895 of them, and they served as a standard infantry anti-tank weapon on every front in the last two years of the war.
