The PL-8, meaning Thunderbolt-8, is a Chinese short-range air-to-air missile derived from the Israeli Python-3, entering Chinese service in 1986 with a domestic license-built version state-certified in the spring of 1989. Guided by passive infrared homing, it carries an 11-kilogram high-explosive warhead to a range of about 20 kilometers at speeds up to roughly Mach 3.5, and a land-based surface-to-air variant was also developed. It has remained in service since 1988 aboard People's Liberation Army Air Force fighters including the J-8, J-10 and J-20.
