The R-12 Dvina was a Soviet theatre ballistic missile developed and deployed during the Cold War, known to NATO as the SS-4 Sandal. It gave the Soviet Union the ability to strike medium-range targets in Western Europe with a megaton-class thermonuclear warhead, and its 1962 deployment to Cuba triggered the Cuban Missile Crisis. All 2,335 missiles built were destroyed by 1993 under the START II treaty.
