Remington Model 1890

Small Arms And Sidearms

The Remington Model 1890, also called the New Model Army, was a single-action revolver made by Remington Arms in the United States. It grew out of the successful Remington Model 1875 and the lesser known Model 1888 transitional revolver, which share its size, general look and removable cylinder. The 1890 kept the solid frame and styling of the 1875 but dropped the large web under the ejector rod housing and added checkered rubber grips. It was built for metallic cartridges and was issued only in .44-40 caliber, with a six-shot cylinder and a barrel of either 7.5 or 5.75 inches. Remington made it between 1890 and 1896 in very small numbers, with a total of 2,020 produced, which makes it one of the most sought-after Remington handguns today. A handful saw service as sidearms with Indian police on Western reservations. Its changes were meant to make it more like the competing Colt single-action pistols of the day, and modern Uberti reproductions of the design are chambered for cartridges such as the .357 Magnum.
