The Remington Zig-Zag Derringer, also called the Pepper Box and first known as Elliot's Pocket Revolver, was a small six-shot pocket pistol made in 1861 and 1862, with fewer than 1,000 produced. It was Remington's first firearm designed for a metallic cartridge and chambered the .22 rimfire short cartridge. Six barrels formed a cluster with zig-zag grooves at the breech end, and a diamond-shaped key running inside from the ring trigger turned the cluster as the mechanism cycled. The hammer was concealed inside the grip frame, and lifting the lever behind the ring returned the ring without firing. Grips were gutta percha, with ivory the only other known original material, and the finish was blue, silver or a combination. The mechanism was delicate, and Remington replaced it with the Remington-Elliot Derringer before all of the pistols were even assembled, so only about 140 examples are known today.
