RIM-161 Standard Missile 3

The RIM-161 Standard Missile 3, known as the SM-3, is a ship-based surface-to-air missile used by the United States Navy to intercept ballistic missiles as part of the Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense System. Its Block IIA variant has a range of 1,200 kilometers, the second longest range among United States Missile Defense Agency anti-ballistic interceptors after the Ground-Based Interceptor. It has also been used once in an anti-satellite role against a satellite in low Earth orbit, and besides the United States Navy it is also operated by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
