The RIM-7 Sea Sparrow is a United States ship-borne short-range anti-aircraft and anti-missile weapon system, developed in the early 1960s from the AIM-7 Sparrow air-to-air missile as a lightweight point-defense weapon that could be retrofitted onto existing warships. Built by Raytheon and General Dynamics, it entered service in 1976 and remains an important part of layered naval air defense, particularly effective against sea-skimming anti-ship missiles.
