The RPG-2 is a man-portable, shoulder-fired anti-tank recoilless weapon developed in the Soviet Union as the successor to the earlier, largely unsuccessful RPG-1. Firing an 82mm warhead from a 40mm launch tube, it offered meaningfully better range and armor penetration than its predecessor, making it effective against late-war and immediate postwar tanks, and it was manufactured and fielded by Soviet state factories from 1954. Its basic layout and firing principle were carried forward into the far more widely used RPG-7.
