The RPK-74 is a Soviet light machine gun and squad automatic weapon, a variant of the earlier RPK chambered instead in the 5.45x39mm intermediate cartridge introduced alongside the AK-74 rifle in 1974. Built on the AK-74's action, it differs from the standard rifle in its longer, heavier chrome-plated barrel, folding bipod and reinforced rear stock trunnion, giving a squad greater sustained firepower than an individual rifle. It has remained in production and service since its introduction.
