The Ruger No. 1 is a single-shot rifle introduced and manufactured by Sturm, Ruger & Co. since 1967, with a design date of 1966 credited to Bill Ruger. It uses a Farquharson-style hammerless falling-block action. An underlever lowers the breechblock to expose the chamber for loading, and closing the lever puts the rifle in battery and cocks the hammer, while a shotgun-style tang safety secures the hammer and sear. The rifle is offered with an Alexander Henry, Beavertail or Mannlicher-style forearm and in sub-models numbered 1A, 1AB, 1B, 1H, 1S, 1V and RSI, with barrel lengths from 20 to 28 inches. It has been chambered in a very wide range of cartridges, from the .22-250 Remington and .223 Remington through the .30-06 Springfield and .308 Winchester to the .45-70 Government. Lenard Brownell, who worked on it at Ruger, said he never managed to blow one apart in testing. It is chiefly a sporting and hunting rifle, and the source states no military service.
