The Shaheen-I, designated Hatf-IV by the Pakistani military, is a land-based short-range ballistic missile developed by the National Defence Complex together with the National Engineering and Scientific Commission. The programme began in 1995 under the physicist Samar Mubarakmand, and the missile was first test fired on 15 April 1999 from the Sonmiani Test Range, with further firings in 2002 and 2003. It is driven by a two-stage solid-fuel rocket motor, has a stated range of 750 kilometres, and is said to be accurate to within 25 to 50 metres because a post-separation attitude correction system adjusts the warhead's path. It can deliver nuclear weapons, and it is carried on MAZ-7310 trucks. The Shaheen-IA variant, first fired in April 2012, reaches about 900 kilometres. Pakistan Army strategic commands operate it, and its name refers to a falcon species of the country's mountains.
