Sky Bow

Missiles And Guided Munitions

Sky Bow, also called Tien Kung, is a family of surface-to-air and anti-ballistic missile defence systems developed in Taiwan by the National Chung-Shan Institute of Science and Technology. Work began after the United States ended bilateral relations with the Republic of China in 1979, and the project was approved in October 1980 as a general-purpose air-defence programme benchmarked against the American Patriot and the Soviet 2K12 Kub. After early test failures the twelfth flight test in 1986 achieved the first intercept of a target aircraft, and the first system, the TK-1, was unveiled that year. The TK-2 added a booster stage and an active radar seeker, the TK-3 was conceived as a lower-tier defence against tactical ballistic missiles, and a ship-launched version of the TK-3 interceptor was tested in 2016. The TK-1 is retired, while the later versions serve with the armed forces of the Republic of China and rely on indigenous phased-array radars.
