The UGM-96 Trident I, also called the C4, is a three stage, solid fueled submarine launched ballistic missile built by Lockheed Martin Space Systems for the United States Navy, capable of carrying up to eight W76 warheads. It succeeded the Poseidon missile and let submarines fire from greater distances from their targets. It entered service in 1979 and remained operational for 26 years before being retired in 2005 and replaced by the more capable Trident II.
