UMPK (bomb kit)

The UMPK is a guidance kit developed by the Russian Bazalt design bureau to convert unguided Soviet-designed aerial bombs into precision-guided glide bombs, building on an earlier low-cost design first proposed by Bazalt in 2002 that never reached production. Russia began using the UMPK operationally in 2023, fitting it to bomb bodies such as the FAB-250, FAB-500, FAB-1500, and FAB-3000 during the invasion of Ukraine, and the Russian defense ministry publicly acknowledged the system that May. The retractable wings and guidance of the kit let an ordinary gravity bomb glide tens of kilometers to its target, allowing aircraft to strike from outside the range of Ukrainian air defenses.
