The VA-111 Shkval is a Soviet-developed supercavitating torpedo in service since 1977, built as a countermeasure against torpedoes fired by undetected enemy submarines after Soviet researchers at the NII-24 institute were tasked with a weapon able to engage nuclear submarines. It generates a gas bubble around its own hull to sharply cut drag, reaching speeds in excess of 200 knots, far beyond any conventional torpedo.
