The Wanzl rifle, also spelled Wänzel, was a breech-loading conversion of the Lorenz M1854 and M1862 rifles adopted by the Austrian Empire after it encountered Prussian needle guns, using a front-hinged trapdoor breech mechanism chambered for a 14x33mm rimfire or centerfire cartridge. About 70,000 Lorenz rifles were converted under a contract for 80,000 units, produced from 1867 through 1918 by the Osterreichische Waffenfabriksgesellschaft, before the design was superseded by the Werndl-Holub M1867 rifle. It was used by the Austrian Empire as well as the Qing Dynasty and the Kingdom of Dahomey, and it was built in infantry, Jager carbine, extra-corps, and wall-mounted variants.
