The revolt was driven partly by the presence of Hutu militia and refugee camps in eastern Zaire tied to the aftermath of the 1994 Rwandan genocide, which Rwanda's new government wanted eliminated. Kabila's forces advanced with little effective resistance across the vast country and reached the capital Kinshasa in May 1997, at which point Mobutu fled into exile and Kabila took power, renaming the country the Democratic Republic of the Congo.FactsFirst Congo WarConnectionsSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1996 1End YearWell-attested1997 1CombatantsWell-attestedZaire; AFDL rebels backed by Rwanda and Uganda 1OutcomeWell-attestedAFDL victory; overthrow of the Mobutu regime 1ClassificationDeath Toll MinWell-attestedfrom 250,000 1Conflict TypeWell-attestedInterstate War 1First Congo WarFilter Results7 entriesWeapon FamilyAllArmored Cars and Reconnaissance Vehicles (1)Assault Rifles (2)Assault Rifles of Europe (1)Assault Rifles of Israel (1)General-Purpose and Medium Machine Guns (1)Rifles and Carbines (2)Rocket-Propelled Grenades and Launchers (1)Semi-Automatic and Battle Rifles (1)Submachine Guns (2)Weapon Type or ClassAllArmoured car with reconnaissance capability (1)Assault rifle (2)Automatic rifle (1)Disposable rocket-propelled grenade launcher (1)General-purpose machine gun (1)Submachine gun (2)CaliberAll.22 Long Rifle (1).41 Action Express (1).45 ACP (1)5.56x45mm NATO (1)6.5x55mm (1)60mm (1)64mm (1)7.5×54mm French (1)7.5×55mm Swiss (1)7.62x39mm (1)7.62x51mm NATO (2)7.92x57mm Mauser (1)9x19mm (2)9×19 mm Parabellum (2)9×21mm (1)Introduced EraAll1942 (1)1945 (1)1951 (1)1954 (1)1960 (1)1970 (2)1972 (1)Service StatusAllIn Service (6)Out of Production (1)OperatorAllIndian Army (1)Israeli Defense Forces (3)Mexican Armed Forces (1)United States Navy (1)Vietnam People's Army (1)Waffen-SS (1)Wehrmacht (1)ManufacturerAllAlkett (1)Carl Gustafs stads gevärsfaktori (1)China North Industries Group Corporation Limited (1)FN Herstal (1)IMI Systems (2)Mauser (1)Panhard (1)Sloboda Čačak (1)Steyr-Daimler-Puch (1)Wilhelm-Gustloff-Stiftung (1)Zastava Arms (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 7Carl Gustaf m/45First Congo WarIWI GalilFirst Congo WarM80 ZoljaFirst Congo WarMG 42First Congo WarPanhard AMLFirst Congo WarUziFirst Congo WarZastava M70 Assault RifleFirst Congo WarConnectionsUsesCarl Gustaf m/45, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Carl Gustaf m/45IWI Galil, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: IWI GalilM80 Zolja, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: M80 ZoljaMG 42, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: MG 42tier 2Panhard AML, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Panhard AMLUzi, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Uzitier 4Zastava M70 Assault Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Zastava M70 (assault rifle)Sources1.
