AKS-74U

Small Arms And Sidearms

The AKS-74U is a compact carbine derivative of the Soviet AK-74 assault rifle, adopted in 1979 and chambered in 5.45x39mm. Its shortened 206.5mm barrel and folding stock let it fill the same close-quarters role as a submachine gun, making it lighter and shorter folded than the comparable American XM177. It was manufactured at the Tula Arms Plant, with production ending in 1993, though it remains in service in the militaries of Russia and other former Soviet states. FAQs

Was there a silenced version of the AKS-74U?

The AKS-74UB was a silenced version firing the 5.45x39mm subsonic cartridge.

Yes. The AKS-74UB was a special silenced version of the AKS-74U, chambered for the 5.45x39mm subsonic cartridge. The standard AKS-74U itself was a compact automatic carbine, made so that specialists who did not need the facilities of a full-length service rifle could still carry an automatic weapon.
