The AKS-74U is a compact carbine derivative of the Soviet AK-74 assault rifle, adopted in 1979 and chambered in 5.45x39mm. Its shortened 206.5mm barrel and folding stock let it fill the same close-quarters role as a submachine gun, making it lighter and shorter folded than the comparable American XM177. It was manufactured at the Tula Arms Plant, with production ending in 1993, though it remains in service in the militaries of Russia and other former Soviet states.
