FAQs

Is the 2S9 Nona a mortar or a howitzer?

It is classed as a mortar but is really a mortar and howitzer hybrid.

It is classed as a self-propelled and air-droppable 120 mm mortar, but the source describes the weapon as a hybrid of a mortar and a howitzer, an unconventional design with no direct NATO counterpart. It is a rifled, breech-loaded weapon that fires high explosive, white phosphorus and smoke rounds as well as laser-guided munitions such as the KM-8 Gran, and it can engage in both indirect and direct fire.
