The Benelli M4 is a semi-automatic combat shotgun produced by the Italian manufacturer Benelli Armi SpA, the fourth and final model in the company's Super 90 line. Designed in 1998, it introduced Benelli's own Auto-Regulating Gas Operated (ARGO) system, developed specifically for this weapon, and it is chambered in 12-gauge. It has since been adopted by the armed forces of Italy, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries, and has seen use in a range of conflicts. Why is the Benelli M4 called the M1014 in United States service?
Military Factory says: "In 1999, the Benelli Armi S.p.A. design was formally accepted into service as the "M1014" Joint Service Combat Shotgun (JSCS) (the designation upgraded from its prototype "XM1014" nomenclature) with a contract for import awarded to the German firearms concern of Heckler & Koch which represented Benelli in the US competition."
