Home›Weapons Systems›Wars Used In›Second Italo-Ethiopian WarWarSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarModernReference and ClassificationDevelopingThe Second Italo-Ethiopian War was fought from 1935 to 1937 after Fascist Italy under Benito Mussolini invaded the Ethiopian Empire, one of the last independent states in Africa, seeking colonial expansion and revenge for Italy's earlier defeat at Ethiopian hands at the Battle of Adwa in 1896. Italian forces under Marshal Pietro Badoglio made extensive and documented use of chemical weapons, including mustard gas, against Ethiopian troops and civilians in direct violation of the 1925 Geneva Protocol, helping to overcome Ethiopia's poorly equipped defenders despite the personal leadership of Emperor Haile Selassie. Addis Ababa fell in May 1936, after which Italy declared Ethiopia annexed and merged it with Eritrea and Italian Somaliland into the colony of Italian East Africa, though scattered Ethiopian resistance continued in the countryside. The League of Nations condemned the invasion and imposed limited economic sanctions on Italy, but its failure to halt the war exposed the League's weakness and is widely seen as a key step toward the collapse of the interwar collective-security system before the Second World War.FactsSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarConnectionsIn the Other AtlasesSourcesComments (0)Reader Challenges (0)FactsStart YearWell-attested1935 3End YearWell-attested1936 3CombatantsWell-attestedItaly against Ethiopia 3OutcomeWell-attestedItaly captured Addis Ababa and announced the annexation of Ethiopia four days later, though Ethiopian resistance continued. 3ClassificationDeath Toll MinWell-attestedfrom 20,000 1Conflict TypeWell-attestedColonial or Anti-Colonial War 2Second Italo-Ethiopian WarFilter Results10 entriesWeapon FamilyAllAmmunition and Cartridges (1)Bolt-Action, Lever-Action and Historic Rifles (7)Heavy Machine Guns (1)Rifles and Carbines (8)Semi-Automatic and Battle Rifles (1)Weapon Type or ClassAllBolt-action rifle (3)bolt-action, magazine-fed repeating rifle (1)Breech-loading rifle (1)Machine gun (1)Semi-automatic carbine (1)single-shot breech-loading black-powder rifle (1)small arm (2)CaliberAll.22 caliber (1).30-06 Springfield (1).45-70 Government (1)11.15x58mmR (1)11x59mmR Gras (2)12.17×42mm RF (1)7.5x54mm (1)7.62x51mm NATO (1)7.62x54mmR (1)7.92x57mm Mauser (2)7x57mm Mauser (3)8mm Lebel (2)8x50mmR Lebel (5)8x52mmR Mannlicher (1)8×50mmR Mannlicher (1)9mm Glisenti (1)Introduced EraAll1867 (1)1870 (1)1874 (1)1887 (1)1888 (1)1890 (1)1891 (1)1914 (1)1915 (1)1918 (1)1924 (2)Service StatusAllIn Service (2)Out of Production (1)Retired (6)OperatorAllArgentine Armed Forces (1)Austro-Hungarian Army (1)French Armed Forces (3)Imperial Japanese Navy (1)People's Liberation Army (2)Red Army (1)Royal Navy (1)Spanish Armed Forces (1)Turkish Armed Forces (1)United States Army (1)Wehrmacht (3)ManufacturerAllBeretta (1)Fegyver- és Gépgyár (1)Hotchkiss et Cie (1)Kalashnikov Concern (1)Manufacture d'armes de Châtellerault (2)Manufacture d'armes de Saint-Étienne (2)Manufacture Nationale d'Armes de Tulle (1)Mauser (1)Remington Arms (3)Sestroretsk arsenal (1)Steyr Arms (1)Tula Arms Plant (1)Westinghouse Electric Corporation (1)Zastava Arms (1)Show ResultsBrowseCompareSelect all 10Beretta M1918Second Italo-Ethiopian WarBerthier rifleSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarFN Model 24 and Model 30Second Italo-Ethiopian WarFusil Gras mle 1874Second Italo-Ethiopian WarHotchkiss Mle 1914 Machine GunSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarLebel Model 1886 RifleSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarMannlicher M1888Second Italo-Ethiopian WarMauser StandardmodellSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarMosin-Nagant RifleSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarRemington Rolling Block RifleSecond Italo-Ethiopian WarConnectionsUsesBeretta M1918, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Beretta M1918Berthier rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Berthier rifleFN Model 24 and Model 30, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: FN Model 24 and Model 30Fusil Gras mle 1874, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Fusil Gras mle 1874Hotchkiss Mle 1914 Machine Gun, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Hotchkiss Mle 1914 machine gunLebel Model 1886 Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Lebel Model 1886 Rifletier 2Mannlicher M1888, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Mannlicher M1888Mauser Standardmodell, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Mauser StandardmodellMosin-Nagant Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Mosin-Nagant (Wikipedia)Remington Rolling Block Rifle, Weapons Systems Well-attested Source Wikipedia: Remington Rolling Block rifleIn the Other AtlasesTook Place InEthiopiaAlso in Geography Atlas: where this subject took place.Sources1.
