What was the BM-21 Grad good at and what was it poor at?
It suited area fire against troops in the open and was not suited to point targets.
The BM-21 was an area weapon rather than a precision one. According to the Federation of American Scientists DOD 101 page, because of its high volume of fire and large area coverage it is well suited for use against troops in the open and for artillery preparations. The same page gives one volley from a BM-21 battalion as 720 rounds. Because its rockets land over a large area, the page says it was not suited for attacks against point targets.
