What replaced the M79 grenade launcher?
The underbarrel M203 took over from it.
The underbarrel M203 replaced it. Military Factory says the M79 was adopted in late 1960 and built from 1961 into 1971, about 350,000 examples in all. An earlier attempt to put a launcher under a rifle, the experimental Colt XM148, was abandoned, and the XM148 and the M79 were eventually superseded by the underbarrel M203 series. The M203 has itself since been replaced in the US Army by the Heckler and Koch M320 series.

Lead section
The M79 grenade launcher is a single-shot, shoulder-fired, break-action grenade launcher that fires a 40×46mm grenade, which uses what the US Army calls the High-Low Propulsion System to keep recoil forces low, and first appeared during the Vietnam War.
Operated By: United States Army, Article text
The M79 was a result of the US Army's Project Niblick, an attempt to increase firepower for the infantryman by having an explosive projectile more accurate with further range than rifle grenades, but more portable than a mortar.
