IWI Galil

Small Arms And Sidearms

The IWI Galil is a family of Israeli automatic rifles chambered for the 5.56x45mm NATO and 7.62x51mm NATO cartridges, designed by Yisrael Galili and Yakov Lior in the late 1960s and drawing heavily on the Finnish RK 62, itself derived from the AK-47. Originally produced by the state owned Israel Military Industries from 1972, the rifle was issued to the Israeli Army in three configurations, the ARM, the AR and the SAR, and has since been manufactured under license by producers around the world. A modernized redesign called the Galil ACE has been made since 2008. FAQs

Why did Israel base the Galil on a Finnish-made Kalashnikov receiver?

Israel could not obtain Kalashnikov rifles in volume and used Valmet RK62 receivers instead.

The low maintenance requirements that kept the AK-47 running caught the attention of the Israeli military after the Six-Day War in 1967. Procuring any volume of the standard rifle of the communist bloc was not possible, so Yisrael Galil and Yakov Lior designed the first Galils using Valmet RK62 receivers, Finland's version of the AK-47. Israel Military Industries introduced the Galil in 1972.
